Second Meeting Recap: Resumes, Internships, & More

Hello everyone! I hope you are having a great Monday! I am sorry for not posting this sooner, but I finally found the time to do this! First of all, I’d like to thank all of you that came last week with your resumes. I hope you all got some much needed help sprucing up those. If you were unable to attend here is a quick recap.

Alyssa made an AWESOME presentation. The link to go see that is here. http://prezi.com/v--yuwathnf3/uthj-internships-and-opportunities/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy It gives you a quick overview on what we covered and tells you about some great internship opportunities. We also did a quick workshop which helped you know how to go about with your resume, even if you don’t have any journalism experience! I will be attaching some examples of some of our officer resumes so go ahead and look at those all you wish.

A few things to remember while doing your resume:
  • Don’t go over a page! Most employers WILL NOT look at your resume past the first page!
  • Be precise and get to the point! You have a target audience! Don’t ramble about a babysitting job, if you are aiming for a broadcast internship.
  • NEVER add a reference that you have not gotten permission from. Most likely they will receive a call and be completely unprepared to talk about you! Always make sure they know they are a reference so they know they should be prepared in case they get called.
You can always find more advice from Communication Career Services, or even set up an appointment or go to drop-in advising to get help in building/improving your resume. Also, remember to create an account with them because they have a ton of resources that are very valuable and there for you to use.

Also, if you want to get a head start be sure to go to the Communication Job & Internship Fair which will be held on October 16. You can get a look at what employers are going by clicking here. Make sure to have resumes and cover letters at hand, ready to hand out, and be dressed professionally. If you still aren't prepared to go to the fair, you can also volunteer! It's a great way to be on the inside of things. For more info on volunteering, click here.

If you have any more questions, feel free to e-mail uthispanicjournalists@gmail.com or send us a message on Facebook! See you next time!

First meeting recap!

Hello everyone! It was wonderful to be able to see so many returning and new faces yesterday at our first meeting! I hope you all enjoyed the pizza and games! Just to quickly recap about yesterday’s meeting for those that were unable to attend, we covered about what UTHJ is, what we are, what we do, and what opportunities we have to offer for you!

UTHJ aims to organize and provide mutual support for students studying journalism. We encourage the study and practice of journalism by presenting networking opportunities through broadcast, print and multimedia outlets. We try to further employment and career opportunities for not only Hispanic students, but all aspiring student journalists. We encourage students to participate in community and campus events that can further your journalism portfolio.

We meet every week on Tuesday’s, but not every week is a meeting. We also do tours, socials, host guest speakers, and hold workshops. In the past we have toured NotiHispano, Univision, the Longhorn Network, and among other places.

We also covered current places that are looking for interns! The Daily Texan is still hiring but you have to hurry up and apply for tryouts because they end tomorrow! You can get more information through http://www.dailytexanonline.com/employment. A good alternative to the Daily Texan is the Horn. The Horn is paid, unlike the Daily Texan. They are currently hiring in all areas. You can find out more job opportunities through this link: http://www.readthehorn.com/Jobs.

If you have any questions or want to know about other possible internships, feel free to contact us through e-mail at uthispanicjournalists@gmail.com. We are also on Facebook, Twitter, and now Instagram!

I hope you guys have a great day and I hope to see you next week, Tuesday, at our first social which will be at Campus Candy!

First Meeting of the Year! Come join us!

Our first meeting will be tomorrow September 10, 2013 from 6:30-7:30 in room 3.108 at the CMA. We will be having lots of fun and not to mention, free food! Bring yourself, bring a friend! Cannot wait to see all of you there!

Make sure to RSVP via our Facebook. We need a head count for pizza! https://www.facebook.com/events/415456925227268/417377941701833/?notif_t=plan_mall_activity
