Second Meeting Recap: Resumes, Internships, & More

Hello everyone! I hope you are having a great Monday! I am sorry for not posting this sooner, but I finally found the time to do this! First of all, I’d like to thank all of you that came last week with your resumes. I hope you all got some much needed help sprucing up those. If you were unable to attend here is a quick recap.

Alyssa made an AWESOME presentation. The link to go see that is here. http://prezi.com/v--yuwathnf3/uthj-internships-and-opportunities/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy It gives you a quick overview on what we covered and tells you about some great internship opportunities. We also did a quick workshop which helped you know how to go about with your resume, even if you don’t have any journalism experience! I will be attaching some examples of some of our officer resumes so go ahead and look at those all you wish.

A few things to remember while doing your resume:
  • Don’t go over a page! Most employers WILL NOT look at your resume past the first page!
  • Be precise and get to the point! You have a target audience! Don’t ramble about a babysitting job, if you are aiming for a broadcast internship.
  • NEVER add a reference that you have not gotten permission from. Most likely they will receive a call and be completely unprepared to talk about you! Always make sure they know they are a reference so they know they should be prepared in case they get called.
You can always find more advice from Communication Career Services, or even set up an appointment or go to drop-in advising to get help in building/improving your resume. Also, remember to create an account with them because they have a ton of resources that are very valuable and there for you to use.

Also, if you want to get a head start be sure to go to the Communication Job & Internship Fair which will be held on October 16. You can get a look at what employers are going by clicking here. Make sure to have resumes and cover letters at hand, ready to hand out, and be dressed professionally. If you still aren't prepared to go to the fair, you can also volunteer! It's a great way to be on the inside of things. For more info on volunteering, click here.
